How Chico Can Provide Google a Unique Case Study

Our area is an urban center (Chico) with substantial ties to our more rural neighbors (Paradise, Oroville, Los Molinos, Biggs, Gridley, Willows). A deployment of the Google Fiber for Communities here would provide Google with data on how the network is utilized by users in rural areas. While this may not initially seem like a hotbed of innovation, not everyone who would benefit from and desire to purchase this technology should it go national, would live in a city. Google would be able to track usage and innovation trends in the outlaying areas nearby as well as in an urbanized, university town setting.

  1. Lots of great discussion tonight. Some links for those of us playing catch up on the technology mention at the forum:

  2. I just filled out the form at http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi and was reminded how poor the options and customer support are in Chico. I documented a recent experience here:

Not sure if it could be useful. I am sure it is no different than many of your experiences.

Good discussion yesterday. I agree with the the idea of really pushing how how this could work directly in line with Chico's sustainable, green, close knit community. Chico is the only place I have ever lived where I truly believe that people can and do mobilize quickly. Also, I think the application could be awesome if it had real residents names with real concrete examples. Something like "Stella, a fourth grader, has been waiting all month to go with her class to the new museum in town, but wouldn't you know she is sick on the day of the field trip. Fortunately, she can stay at home, get healthy and still be with her class virtually thanks to this new technology." Maybe not this exactly, but something along these lines feels more powerful than "kids could go to the museum virtually".

I am glad this is all being pursued.
