How Chico Can Provide Google a Unique Case Study

Our area is an urban center (Chico) with substantial ties to our more rural neighbors (Paradise, Oroville, Los Molinos, Biggs, Gridley, Willows). A deployment of the Google Fiber for Communities here would provide Google with data on how the network is utilized by users in rural areas. While this may not initially seem like a hotbed of innovation, not everyone who would benefit from and desire to purchase this technology should it go national, would live in a city. Google would be able to track usage and innovation trends in the outlaying areas nearby as well as in an urbanized, university town setting.

Why Chico?

Chico and its surrounding environ represent an area of hyper-concentrated innovators and high-frequency internet users. Between Chico State and Butte College, our area can boast over 25,000 college students of every demographic imaginable. Not included in this figure are thousands of professors, educators, administrators, distance learning students, and the various global initiatives found in any university center. These students are constantly developing new “killer apps,” downloading massive files and pushing the known boundaries of social networking. Unleashing their potential with ultra-high speed connectivity could be a veritable gold mine of data for Google.

Some of the largest and best run departments at Chico State include Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics, Communications Studies, Communication Design, Marketing, Construction Management, Computer Science, Recording Arts and a thriving study abroad program, all of which could provide countless angles of innovation for Google’s research given the opportunity.

The possibilities for high bandwidth use by college students even in less obvious disciplines are very easy to see. Humanities students could attend live streaming lectures from across the globe in our various theaters; data exchange procedures for art and film projects could be streamlined and exponentially expedited.

This would provide useful data for the further implementation of Google Fiber and modeling capabilities for marketing to educators and education centers.

Chico possess a burgeoning biomedical research sector, focused around a cluster of laser technologies companies. The potential uses of ultra-high bandwidth by these companies are impossible to predict, but given the nature of the research being conducted at these facilities (including, but not limited to, eradication of basal cell carcinoma, and potentially revolutionary agricultural sterilization procedures) providing them with ultra-high speed internet connectivity could not only provide Google with useful data chronicling commercial research uses for it’s network, but improve society as a whole, thus linking Google with extremely exciting and potentially beneficial technological innovation for the planet.

Chico is also the center of a variety of tech oriented companies, all locally grown, which have growth-oriented outlooks and would certainly provide Google with numerous opportunities to study the usage of this network by small tech businesses.

There are several internet retailers of national renown that that sprung up in Chico, all of which are experiencing growth in a time of economic recession. Lulu’s.com, Kleen Kanteen, A Main Hobbies, Chico Bag, and Moby Wrap all depend of internet sales to drive their businesses. These companies have seen their products spread all over the country and some have made inroads internationally. Google may be interested to see what companies like this can do with their new network. Who know what the result may be? But these companies have a proven ability to adapt and make use of their resources effectively, so they could be perfect guinea pigs to see what these businesses can do.
